Speaking with Confidence Taking the Fear out of Public Speaking

Public speaking is our greatest fear  Surveys on what people fear the most always ends up with public speaking at #1  That means that people fear public speaking even more than death

How can you take the fear out of public speaking?  Preparation  Practice  Experience

How can you best prepare for a presentation?  Content  Organization  Practice your delivery

Content  Know your audience  Know your purpose  Research if necessary  Share what you know

Organization  Axiom: Tell them, tell them again, and tell them that you told them  Introduction  Body – Main points and supporting points  Conclusion

Mark Twain once said: Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself. There is nothing in the world like a persuasive speech to fuddle the mental apparatus and upset the convictions and debauch the emotions of an audience not practiced in the tricks and delusions of oratory.

Introduction  Attention getting device (Quotations, Startling statements, Statistics, Story)  Overview of main points

Body  3 to 5 main points  Subpoints – must have a least 2  Support (facts, statistics, stories, personal experience)

Conclusion  Summarize your main points  Refer back to your attention getting device  Tell your audience what you want them to remember or do

Delivery  Practice out loud  Be loud enough  Have eye contact with your audience  Make it interesting by adding inflection which is increasing and decreasing your volume, rate, and pitch  The better you know your material, the easier this is to do

Final thoughts  As a board member or administrator, you will be speaking about your district and what is going on in public education  Be sure you to know what your own district is doing and speak about that  Preparation and practice will help give you the confidence you will need to give an effective presentation
