Karen DuBose Oregon Water Resources Commission Meeting November 20, 2009

Goals of this study Discover what factors influence the public acceptance of water reuse in Corvallis Make recommendations about next steps and how to conduct public outreach Used a mailed survey Reuse in Snoqualmie, WA

Percentage of respondents choosing "very favorable" or "favorable" for various recycled water uses.

Acceptance of water reuse if it is cheaper or more sustainable than discharging into the river, and acceptance of turning reclaimed water into drinking water if regulations allowed it.

Factors influencing acceptance Sustainability is by far the clearest factor Trust in the city Prior knowledge of wastewater Gender, depending on use Education

There are many sources of information concerning the use of treated wastewater. Which of the following sources would you find credible?

What are the best ways to communicate with you concerning how Corvallis will meet the new Willamette River regulations?

Develop a set of feasible options, either with or without public input Communicate the options available through newspaper, city newsletter and direct-mailed pamphlets Assess public opinion again to determine preferred options and education needs Have information available from a wide variety of sources Consider hiring OSU scientists to do research Recommendations for Corvallis
