CRP5 Strategic Research Portfolio Resource Recovery & Reuse (RRR) RRR of nutrients, water, organic matter and energy from otherwise wasted resources is a fundamental pillar of NRM supporting a variety of productive ecosystem services and our adaptation to Climate Change.

The RRR challenge Although resource recovery & reuse – from waste composting to biogas production or wastewater irrigation - is an obvious win-win situation for waste managers and farmers, we hardly find sustainable closed loop processes at larger scale. What goes wrong?  Strong technical research, missing business perspective.  Too high dependence on public subsidies in low-income countries.

Resource Recovery & Reuse Objective: To increase the scale and viability of the safe and productive reuse of water, nutrients, organic matter and energy from domestic and agro-industrial waste streams for food security and livelihoods. Targets: Analysis of the 50 most promising existing, emerging & potential Business Models for waste reuse for agriculture. Sanitation Safety Plans for risk assessment & mitigation (with WHO). Feasibility studies for the implementation of safe business models across the developing world. Outcomes: Access to private capital; Cost recovery in the sanitation service chain; Resource recovery for food production; Increased food safety; Training materials for business schools interested in RRR.

RRR and the CGIAR: a solid foundation  15 years of work on safe wastewater and excreta reuse.  10 years of work on municipal waste composting and co-composting of fecal sludge & solid waste.  5 years of work on agro-industrial waste reuse and blending co-compost with fertilizer.  3 years of work on urine reuse in urban areas.  Large network of national and international partners and multi-disciplinary teams working in offices across Asia, Africa and Latin America.
