Classifications Schemes and Class Scheme Items in the Curation Tool: Interface Design Audrey Lipps, User-Centered Design 12/2/08

Purpose User-Centered Design is creating visual and interaction designs to incorporate all Classification Scheme (CS) and Class Scheme Item (CSI) functionality of the current Admin Tool into a future release of the caDSR Curation Tool. This briefing presents the current state of the design. Comments welcome.

Contents  Objectives of new design  Search – Specifying criteria – Viewing results – Adding to and viewing Cart  Edit – Tabs – Associating objects to CS and CSI – Block edit  Create – Select object – Tabs  Next Steps

Objectives of New Design  Move CS/CSI functionality to Curation Tool – Search for existing – Edit existing – Associate administered items to CS/CSI – Create new  Utilize menus for actions  Organize attributes in tabbed format  Address user concerns about current functionality

Search The Search interface remains similar to the current interface, with the search fields displayed on the left and results displayed on the right. User actions have been moved to a menu bar at the top of the work area.

Search: Specifying Criteria The Search For drop-down list has been expanded to include Classification Scheme. Just above the Start Search button, the ‘Customize Display’ option lets the user select which attributes will be displayed for search results (see next slide).

Search: Customize Display Users can choose some or all of the attributes for the type of administered item being displayed.

Search: Results Display Search results are displayed in tabular format, sorted by one attribute, with the sort arrow next to the header of the sort column. Click any column header to change the sort. Check boxes allow for multiple objects to be selected for group actions such as Block Edit or Add to Cart.

Adding to and Viewing Cart Select objects to be added to cart by checking check- boxes, then select Add to cart option from the Edit menu. View cart contents via the View menu.

Search: Quick Action Menu Clicking the Quick-Action icon next to an object brings up a context menu with available actions. Highlighting shows which object is in focus. Some actions require selection (via the checkboxes) of multiple objects, e.g., Block edit. Actions are also available on the Edit menu. Quick- Action icon

Edit On Edit and Create screens, attributes and related components are organized into tabs. Note that Save and Cancel are outside the tab structure and apply to the whole object.

Edit CSI The Edit screen for a CSI.

Associating Objects to CS and CSI For associating objects to CS and CSI there are two display formats for the existing CS/CSI hierarchy, alphabetical and by context. User can also filter the existing list to create a more focused list.

Block Edit A limited set of attributes can be edited for a group of objects. Block edit is available through the Edit menu and the quick-action menu.

Create New Object User selects type of object to create.

Create CS Create object page layouts mimic edit layouts.

Next Steps  Review briefing and mock-up with project leaders  Present briefing to curators and other users for comment  Solicit additional comments from selected users on mock-up  Revise design based on feedback
