The “Triumphal Entry” Mark 11

An Outline of Mark The Coming of the Kingdom: –“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand!” - Mark 1:15 (NASB-U) The Power & Authority of the Kingdom (Ch 2-10) The Driving Principle of the Kingdom: –“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 (NASB-U)

Finally: the Coming of the King! Mark 11:1. As they approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples, 2. And said to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 3. And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ you say, ‘ The Lord has need of it’; and immediately he will send it back here.” 4. And they went away and found a colt tied at the door outside in the street; and they untied it. 5. And some bystanders were saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6. And they spoke to them just as Jesus told them, and they gave them permission.

Finally: the Coming of the King! 7. And they brought the colt to Jesus and put their garments on it; and He sat upon it. 8. And many spread their garments in the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields. 9. And those who went before, and those who followed after, were crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; 10. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David; Hosanna in the highest!”

A Day of Reversals! 1. The “Messianic Secret” is out of the bag! –Psalm 118:25, 26 salvation has finally come! salvation has finally come! a dramatic moment long anticipated! a dramatic moment long anticipated! “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble and mounted on a donkey, even colt, the foal of a donkey.” --Zechariah 9:9 The “Triumphal” Entry: Some of the Pharisees in the multitude said to Him, “teacher, rebuke your disciples.” And He said to them, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!” – Luke 19:41

A Day of Reversals! 1. The “Messianic Secret” is out of the bag! 2. A King Riding on a Donkey! Not a “Triumphal Entry” on a majestic stallion! “But many who are first will be last, and the last, first.” Mark 10:31 “your king is coming to you…humble and mounted on a donkey” --Zechariah 9:9 The “Triumphal” Entry:

Day of Reversals! 1. The “Messianic Secret” is out of the bag! 2. A King Riding on a Donkey! 3. Not reveling in glory, but weeping in agony over his domain! And when He approached, He saw the city and wept over it, saying “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.” – Lk.19:41-44 The “Triumphal” Entry: For days shall come upon you when your enemies will throw up a bank before you, and surround you, and hem you in on every side, and will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.” – Lk.19:41-44

The “Backwards” Thinking of God Such a Different Response! –So Many Reversals, He’s So Confusing! Conceals His Identity for 3 ½ years… Now Proclaims Adamantly He’s the King: Conceals His Identity for 3 ½ years… Now Proclaims Adamantly He’s the King: “…if these become silent, the stones will cry out!” A King Riding a Donkey? Weeping with Grief at His Coronation? The “Triumphal” Entry:

The “Backwards” Thinking of God Such a Different Response! –So Many Reversals, He’s So Confusing! –So Irritating! The King won’t release them from Poverty… The King won’t release them from Roman Cruelty… He Subverts all their Messianic expectations! No wonder people were disillusioned! No wonder they crucified Him! The “Triumphal” Entry:

The “Backwards” Thinking of God Such a Different Response! Because He sees needs differently. –They wanted a Messiah to meet their needs as priorized by them: poverty relief, freedom… –But God wanted to meet their needs as prioritized by Him: Problem #1: their Spiritual Alienation from Him. “You can’t even BE in my Kingdom!” –A real point of departure, even today: Priority. “I want it fixed right now, God! Peace and Affluence!” God says: You need forgiveness first. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God… John 1:12 (NASB-U) The “Triumphal” Entry:

The “Backwards” Thinking of God Such a Different Response! Because He sees needs differently. He therefore has a different approach to life. –He deals FIRST with real needs, not felt needs: The “Triumphal” Entry: We Complain About Our: But He Addresses Our: Anxiety: our circumstances. Need to Trust in Him. Loneliness.Selfishness. Disappointment. Need for Gratitude

The “Backwards” Thinking of God Such a Different Response! Because He sees needs differently. He therefore has a different approach to life. Possible Reactions: –Outright Disgust, rejection, rebellion… –Disguised Rebellion: manmade Religion. God’s Reaction: Mark 11: The Exploitation of Man-Made Religion. The Hypocrisy of Man-Made Religion. The “Triumphal” Entry: The chief priests and the scribes heard this, and began seeking how to destroy Him; for they were afraid of Him… Mark 11:18 "If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.“ - John 11:48

The “Backwards” Thinking of God Such a Different Response! Because He sees needs differently. He therefore has a different approach to life. Possible Reactions: –Disgust, rejection, rebellion… –Disguised Rebellion: manmade Religion. –Or, More Trust: Because He is Sovereign. – –The Messiah’s rejection was the Cornerstone of God’s plan. The “Triumphal” Entry: Psalm 118:22 “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner stone”

Because He is Right. –He knows all about the future. –He knows all about you. The “Triumphal” Entry:
