INTRODUCTION It is a known fact that most professionals leave an organisation due to lack of career growth. Active career development initiatives by a company is a key retention tool to keep the best talent within its fold. It is one of the greatest motivators to keep an employee happy and engaged. Career development become the concern of an employee and usually accepted as one of the importance activities of HRM. From the employees’ point of view career development initiatives gives them a clear focus about their career track. An organisation focusses on developing the career path of its employees boosts the morale and ultimately the productivity of its staff.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS LECTURE Upon completing this chapter student should be able to: Understand the concept of career planning & development. Describe the importance of career planning and development Describe career development stages Describe programs and methods of career development

Definition of the terms Career- is all the jobs that are held during one’s working life Career path – is the sequential pattern of jobs that forms one’s career Career goals – are the future positions one strives to reach as part of a career Career planning – is the process by which one selects career goals and the path to those goals Career development – the personal improvements one undertakes to achieve a personal career path.
