Presentation transcript:

Discipline vs. Punishment “Choosing the best way to guide children” Discipline: Training that develops control, character and boundaries *rules *reinforcing *manners Punishment: A penalty for wrong doing (negative) *time-out, scolding, extra chores *grounding, spanking *loss of privileges

Rules to follow: Appropriate for the misbehavior Age appropriate Confirm wrong-doing Follow through Be consistent Appropriate for the individual child Explain why your punishing them Clear boundaries

Scenario Jimmy is six years old and has been playing with his toys. His mother tells him dinner will be ready in 15 minutes. She asks him to start putting his toys away and get ready for dinner. He yells “I don’t want to”! Mom repeats that he needs to put his toys in their baskets and wash his hands. Jimmy again says “I won’t do it” and throws a hand full of legos. Mom walks over to Jimmy and takes him by the arm as she yells “you don’t talk to me that way young man! You are being such a bad boy. Go to your room until your Dad gets home”.

What should she do? WHAT IS AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE FROM MOM? WHAT COULD BE THE LONG TERM CONSEQUENSE OF IGNORE THIS BAD BEHAVIOR?

Parenting Styles Democratic Style: Parents establish clear rules and expectations and discuss them with the child.

Authoritarian Style: Parents establish ridged rules and expectations and strictly enforce them.

Permissive Style: Parents let the child’s preferences take priority and they rarely force a child to conform to standards.

Rejecting Style: Parents who don’t pay much attention to their child’s needs and have no expectations.
