The Renaissance began in Italy. Network of city- states- located near water/trade routes. Wealthy patrons Midpoint between Europe and the East.

RENAISSANCE – A re- birth or art, language, literature and science that occurred in Italy during the 1300’s and lasted until the 1600’s. The ideals and traits of the Renaissance will spread to Northern Europe as well.

A Renaissance Man is a man who is skilled in a variety of areas. A great example is Leonardo da Vinci who painted, designed weapons of war, dissected cadavers, and wrote poetry.

PATRON – A wealthy person who supports the arts. During the Italian Renaissance, wealthy patrons like Lorenzo the Magnificent pictured here, hired artists like Michelangelo to create works of art for their city- state, their family, and the Pope.

“The Pieta” by Michelangelo.

“Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinci.

“School of Athens” by Raphael

Painting - “Jan Arnolfini and his wife” by Jan Van Eyck.

Traits include: perspective, shading techniques and a nature filled setting.

Northern Artists favored these traits: The use of OIL based paints. Fewer religious paintings – they were hired to paint family portraits, wedding portraits and outdoor scenes or village life. Wood carvings for the printing press were also common.
