WHAP Week 3 August 24-28

Monday, August 24  Test scores will be available to check via IC tomorrow.  We will review tests in class on Thursday.  Today: Perspective/POV  Is evolution a thing? Friends debate (I named my Shih Tzu after Phoebe)  “They Thought The World is Flat”  Homework: Read Ch. 2 p (Reading Schedule is pending)  HB #13: “Must Know Vocab Terms by Period/Era”  HB #14: Define any words you are NOT familiar with (you will see MANY of these words throughout the year).

“They Thought the World is Flat”  Q: What do you know about “Columbus sailing the Ocean Blue in 1492”?  Q: How do you know that the flat-earth story is true? Where did you learn about it? What evidence do you have?  Read Docs 1-7 and look for places where the accounts either supported, extended, or contested their thinking about Columbus and Europeans.

“They Thought the World is Flat”  Read Docs #8 & 9  Do they support, extend, or contest your thinking about Columbus and the flat-Earth idea?

“They Thought the World is Flat”  If people prior to 1492 generally believed that the earth was flat, then how do we explain:  The classical story of Atlas holding up a round earth?  Eratosthenes figuring out the earth’s circumference 2,000 years ago?  Was it possible that people at one time, possibly during the Classical era, had such knowledge of the world, only to forget it later?  Why might the flat-earth story emerge? What purpose would it serve?  Does it make a difference which version of the story people believe?

Tuesday, August 25  SLO’s: Do your best….no penalty in anyway.   VA7ZE3K  Handbook #15 a & b  ANYONE THAT HASN’T TAKEN THE FIRST TEST HAS UNTIL THURSDAY 8:15 AM TO DO SO!  Reading schedule: read p  HB # 15 a & b   Get a 5: 600 BCE to 600 CE Intro (15:40)
