What you will learn Some groups face inequalities with income and poverty

Success Criteria Explain in what ways ethnic minorities face inequalities with income and poverty.

Poverty in the USA The American Dream would have us believe that everyone in the USA is rich and enjoys a high standard of living. The American Reality is that all Americans are not equal. It is estimated that 37 million Americans are officially living in poverty. Many cannot afford the basic necessities. Many cannot afford decent homes. Many cannot afford medical care. As a result, many turn to drugs and crime to get money.

Poverty in the USA In 2007, the official poverty level was set at a household income of $21,027. However a study suggested that to have the basics such as food, housing, clothes childcare, health care and transport in Tennessee a lone parent would need $26,680. This is one of the poorest areas in the USA. The same family in Washington DC would need $60,320 for basic necessities.

Who are the Poor? Some ethnic minorities three times more likely to suffer from poverty than white people. Linked to income, education and discrimination. Black children suffer most of all. A child living in poverty will not get the same opportunity for education as health.

Task We are going to watch a documentary on Poverty in the USA. As you watch, take notes on he following: Who are the children living in poverty? Where do they live? What is life like for them? What are they doing to improve their situations?

Can I… Explain in what ways ethnic minorities face inequalities with income and poverty.
