How is best to learn a new language? Some tips and tricks
Practice o Practice really makes a difference. o Practice as often as you can – short practice times daily work better than long practice times once a week. o Practice reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Flash cards o Make your own with verb conjugations. o Use the flash cards from the book’s website o Use flashcards with a picture on one side and the word on the other.
Apps o Check out various applications for your phone that help you practice French. o Duolingo seems to be a favorite app. You can also use their website o Memrise is also useful.
Speak o Speak as much as you can to anyone who knows the language (a classmate, perhaps). o Translate English into French in your mind. o Go to to hear pronunciation if you are not sure.
Read o Read labels that have English and French. o Find a children’s book and try to translate. o Find online articles with simple French. o Read articles on culture from
Write o Text in French. o Write whatever French words you know in place of English words in a journal (secrets will be kept extra safe).
Listen o Find French music online that you like. o Watch appropriate French movies or take a movie that you know well and change the language setting to French.
