Heaven: A Realizable Goal Lessons with Heaven in View
John 21:18-19 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk where ever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) Heaven: A Realizable Goal “Follow ME” “In your death you are going to glorify God” Peter’s Mistakes… BUT in spite of all these mistakes the Lord was patient with him. He was long suffering. And in that sense it makes me have hope.
Heaven: A Realizable Goal Matthew 14:22-33 Remember Peter walking on the water? – “One dark and stormy night” (vs ) – Jesus came walking on the sea about 3 am (vs ) – Peter said, “Lord, if it is you” let me come to you. (vs ) – “Jesus immediate reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying ‘Why did you doubt?’” (vs ) When the storms are raging I’m thankful Jesus assured, “I will never leave you nor forsake you”
Heaven: A Realizable Goal Matthew 16:21-23 Remember Peter rebuking the Lord? – Jesus began to show his disciples “he must be killed” (v. 21) – Peter said, “Far be it from you, Lord! This will never happen to you.” (v. 22) – Jesus responded, “Get behind me, Satan!” (v. 23) For those times when we forget who God is and who is in charge, I’m thankful to know that the Lord is longsuffering with me.
Heaven: A Realizable Goal Matthew 26:36-46 Remember Peter falling asleep in the garden? – “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” (vs ) – “He came to the disciples and found them sleeping. ” (v. 40) – “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (vs ) Jesus recognized Peter’s humanity. He is patient and long suffering. I’m thankful He didn’t send Peter out of the garden!
Heaven: A Realizable Goal A Pattern of Sinfulness Peter keeps doing things. One minute he’s doing a great and noble thing; the next he’s on his face, doing incredibly… Stupid things Sinful things Weak things Unspiritual things
Heaven: A Realizable Goal Luke 22:54-62 Remember Peter’s ultimate mistake? The denial – “Peter followed at a distance.” (vs ) – Three times Peter said, “I don’t know the man!” (vs ) – “And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.” (vs ) Jesus will not pitch out those with a heart motivated by repentance. The Lord wants a people of a broken and contrite heart.
