THE MOBILE PHONE A Classroom Tool

Switch on NOW!! IOS go to the App Store and download Socrative Student Android go to Google play and do same

QUESTION: True or False I allow pupils to use their mobile phones in particular classes.

New question One sentence on the minuses of using mobile phones in the classroom. One only please

Risks……………………. Sending friends text messages during class time. Any different to paper notes?

Risks……………………. Sending or receiving test answers. Cheating at exams, nothing new there!

Risks………………………. Non-filtered web access that can be used to spread content that some parents do not want their children exposed to. Cheaper to access at home using computer or WiFi. School Wi-Fi can be filtered.

Cyber bullying Bullying or harassment via unwanted text messaging. Taking and distributing inappropriate digital photos of students. Not confined to class or the mobile phone. School policy needed here. More likely to take place outside the classroom.

Worries …….. Recording teachers can be detrimental to teacher reputation !!!!!

TIPS…………….. Make cell phones visible. Require students to place their cell phones on the top right- hand corner of their desks when they come into class. That way you will know if someone is texting or calling a friend when they're supposed to be learning.

Pluses…………. Is cost effective for schools Reduces the need for all students to have access to computers in classroom Need less equipment like digital cameras, camcorders, mics etc

Pluses…………. If pupils are going to have them in schools anyway, irrespective of whether it is officially allowed, they may as well be exploited for learning. Overcomes some of the problems of ‘distraction’ etc.

Pluses………….. Can be used as creative tool – making podcasts, picture blogs, twittering etc Encourages engagement -Socrative Pupils are encouraged to use general reference books so why not phones – as dictionary, spell checker, thesaurus, encyclopaedia etc. As specific research tool via web access

Socrative………………….. Results are displayed instantly for the entire class to see, are updated in real time, and can be downloaded for future reference. Gather information about content mastery in their class.

Mobile phone Supporting locational learning contexts such as field-trips, museums and work-based learning Enhancing interactivity. Engaging ‘shy’ learners through use of familiar, non- threatening.

Creating – Students create projects that involve video editing, storytelling, video casting, podcasting, and animating Evaluating – Students show their understanding of a topic or participate in evaluating a peers understanding of a topic Analysing –Students complete tasks that involves structuring, surveying, outlining, and organizing Applying – Students illustrate, present, demonstrate, and simulate Understanding –students explain, blog, subscribe, categorize, annotate, and tweet. Digital tools to allow students to understand include Remembering: Students recall, bookmark, list, search, create mind maps Bloom’s Taxonomy

Teaching Chemistry Video experiments. Can be edited on device IOS Perfect Video Editor – Lite Android Magister video editor Download to PC and use Window Movie Maker

Video

Teaching Molecular Structure

Pupils then build and construct molecules using Molymod

Video by pupil

Stop Motion animation to illustrate reactions ( Methane and Chlorine)

How to……… 1. Clip the mobile on to a retort stand, facing down at an A4 page. 2. Take individual photos and then play in sequence OR 3. Download to computer and edit 4. Download stop-motion apps. 5. IOS and Android

Sharing files with pupils Dropbox and Evernote

Use GOQR.ME

Generate QR code to your link. Download file.

QR codes: Adding QR codes to word documents for students to check their answers

QR Codes: Print a QR code on a sticker and place in a text book at the relevant point. Pupils scanning the QR code are then taken to related material example a video, web page or source of further information.

Using the mobile as a colorimeter Test setup: To measure concentrations. 4 Cuvettes diluted as follows. Dilutions: 1,4,16,64 Potassium permanganate solutions.

Android and IOS colour picker programs IOS --ColorAssist, PallettesLite Android –RGB Color Picker. Return CMYK,HSL,HSV,RGB,YUV values for colour of the solution. Example: RGB values for the Potassium Permanganate solutions

RGB Values Select the G values and plot a graph

Studying the effects on reaction rate of (i) concentration and (ii) temperature The precipitate of sulfur formed gradually obscures a cross marked on paper and placed beneath the reaction flask. The rate of reaction, and consequently the time taken to obscure the cross, depends on a number of variables, conc and temp. Measure the rate of sulphur formation by using the exposure meter on a mobile phone camera to calculate transmitted light.

Light Sensors

Experimental setup

E-Books…………. Easily read by Amazon Kindle, CoolReader etc available on all formats. PowerPoint's, Docs, PDF etc can all be converted to the e- books using Calibre ( free software)

Some Useful Apps…………..

Socrative: True or False I will now consider using the mobile phone as a teaching aid.
