Theodicy: The Study of Evil  If God is Benevolent (all-good), Omnipotent (all-powerful) and Omniscient (all-knowing), how could evil exist?  In other words, if God exists, why do bad things happen?

Is God Perfect? “Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?” –Epicurus The Epicurean Paradox Theodicy: The study of the ‘Problem of Evil’

Logical Proof: Theodicy  Concept of God  1). God is all-powerful (omnipotent)  2). God is all-knowing (omniscient)  3). God is good (omnibenevolent)  Evil Exists because…  1). He can’t do anything about it  2). He doesn’t know about it  3). He doesn’t care about it

Solutions?  Two Types (not a solution): Moral & Nonmoral Evil  Denial of Evil: Evil doesn’t truly exist (Matter of Perspective? Definition of ‘evil’?) Evil detracts; good adds  Least of All Evils: Leibniz claimed God created “The Best of all possible worlds.”  Aesthetic Totality: Evil is necessary to know good; God is a process and therefore what we call evil is a necessary step for God’s development

Theodicy: (Possible) Solutions  Free Will: Evil is created by us and our choices  Justice in the Afterlife: God will bring balance later  Mysterious Ways: We cannot know why evil exists
