Being Human
Watch Video: O How does this story show what it means to be human?
Being Human Humans are spiritual-material beings. We are bodies with souls. They are not separate from one another.
Being Human means that: O We can think - Although other animals demonstrate advanced levels of instinct, what can humans do (thoughts-wise) that animals cannot? O We are free – Choosing to do right rather than wrong makes us free. How does this reflect why God created us? O We can love – We can use our freedom to do good for others. To mistreat others is a misuse of freedom. O We have a God-given body –Jesus became human and the Spirit lives in us.
Humans are related to others in a community. We live with ourselves as well as others, we need a healthy self- esteem to be completely comfortable with others.
Relating to others means that: O We need one another – It is God’s plan that we should not be alone (Genesis) and we live interdependently. O We have a history – We have inherited all the benefits (and mistakes, as well) of the human community. O We are images of God and stewards of the Earth – We are God’s own image in the world. By using our talents and sharing God’s work in Creation, we are being fully human.
Relating to others means that: O We are God’s prized Creation - We should treat everyone with equal dignity. No person is an object, they are a child of God. O We are good, but weakened by sin – We need to realize that we make mistakes, but that God forgives us and we can strive to do better.
