EUROPEAN FORESTRY COMMISSION Thirtieth session Rome, 10 October 2000 TIMBER COMMITTEE Fifty-eighth session Forest Products Annual Market Review findings (1 of 2) Consumption of sawn hardwood in the ECE region rose in 1999, by 2.2%, due to high demand for furniture and construction-related uses as well as other uses, such as packaging and pallets. Trade was at record levels in North America and Europe in 1999 and in early 2000 trade continued to accelerate. North America and Europe each produced roughly 1 million m3 more of sawn hardwoods in 1999.

EUROPEAN FORESTRY COMMISSION Thirtieth session Rome, 10 October 2000 TIMBER COMMITTEE Fifty-eighth session Forest Products Annual Market Review findings (2 of 2) The windstorms which felled millions of cubic metres of hardwoods at the end of 1999 in Europe resulted in higher than normal levels of production and trade in Following the 1998 economic crisis in Russia, the CIS continued to have weak demand and production of sawn hardwood, although exports rose slightly.
