Warm UpWarm Up, 1/7/09 [3 min] What is a sensory detail? Name all the senses. What is a word picture? Why is it important in your introduction paragraph? Do think that using a word picture in your introduction will help you pass the FCAT Writes? Explain. Not here yesterday? BE QUIET FOR 3 MINUTES.

What we know… A word picture is a description of a scene or situation. It is made up of sensory details (touch, taste, hearing, smell, sight). Using a word picture allows the reading to see, touch, taste, hear, and smell what the writer describes.

Prompt: Best Day Ever… My best day ever was when I went to the park. It was the best because we had food, drinks, and my friends were there. Now let me tell you why it was so great. It was a very hot day. Sweat was dripping down my face as a passed by the BBQ grill. I could smell the chicken and baked beans roasting over the open fire. I opened a bottle of my favorite soda. Gulp. Ice cold, just how I like it.. VS

Transitioning… Ok, so we have ourselves a word picture…now what?

Transitioning… Make a thesis statement: – A quick summary of your support you’ll use – THIS SHOULD BE ONE SENTENCE.

Watch and learn… It was a very hot day. Sweat was dripping down my face as a passed by the BBQ grill. I could smell the chicken and baked beans roasting over the open fire. I opened a bottle of my favorite soda. Gulp. Ice cold, just how I like it. With good food, drink, and friends, who wouldn’t think this was the best day ever?

Today… More practice with word pictures I have three (3) prompts. 10 minutes each, with room for discussion. Remember to describe it using sensory detail.

“Mr. Hampton’s Challenge” I will write along with you. YOUR CLASS will choose what I write about for the given prompt. (I can veto certain INAPPROPRIATE suggestions). I need one volunteer to face-off against me for each prompt—both yours and mine will be read to the class. Reward: Golden Ticket given to you tomorrow.
