Archibald Murphey T he Great Reformer He fought for the approval of a literacy fund to establish the public school system He fought for a Board of Internal Improvements that would manage the building of harbors, canals, and turnpikes He tried to reform the constitution dominated by the east, and make it a fair form of government for all of NC His efforts in all three areas would not be realized until after his death

NC Gold Rush

Reed Gold Mine is the first documented find of gold in the United States North Carolina led the country in Gold Production until 1848

John Reed was a Hessien soldier and who worked his farm for 17 years His son found the 17 lb nugget when bow and arrow hunting Used it as a doorstop Sold a 17 lb nugget for $3.50 (was worth $3600)

One of his partner’s slaves found a hunk of gold that weighed 28 lbs. Reed used his money to buy more land and began trying to mine the gold Thousands of immigrants came to NC when “lode” mining started. Lode mining required investment money, skilled workers, and advanced machinery to come to the Piedmont region.

The NC gold rush produced wealth($16 million gold coins), technology(steam power, milling), and culture(13 languages in one mine) California’s gold rush evolved into a frenzy and caused the NC gold rush to disappear
