What is the future of the UTW Blumine Island Program?

For the whole week we had to work as a team. We had to organize what we were doing for the day. We didn’t really have help from the staff they were only around if we needed them. We did a lot of interesting things like pulling out weeds and finding out what they were and building the weta boxes and putting them in different places and getting to know some of the birds such as the silver eye and the saddle back. The week was quite challenging and different from other camps but the week was good and I will miss it a lot

Strength and Weakness of the UTW Blumine Island Program STRENGTHS Giving the people the experience of what a career in conservation would entail. How has it influenced me? CADE They say that this island isn’t sustainable enough to hold kiwi and to find that this island is completely pest free. To free up the track ways for future generations to come. How green the island is has made me want to help out and tell the people about it. RACHEL If no one came on this island to clean and make the tracks then it would be a big mess and there would be so many weeds and no birds. If there were people on the island they would be making a big difference and they would be cleaning the tracks and bringing the birds like the Saddle back and in the future the kiwi. DANIELLE This experience has given me a hands-on approach to a career in conservation. I have seen what goes into projects such as Blumine Island and what results come out of it. The knowledge and sights I have received from this island has given me an interesting insight and has made me want to make sure I do my bit for the future of our world. BECKIE Making me think about how New Zealand use to before human contact and how much little time we need to give to keep something we cherish alive. It shows me how much work and thought and troubles people have to go to make a place safe for our native birds.

We feel that the most important way for the Blumine Island Program to be sustainable is for the people who had this experience to take it away with them and tell their story. Blumine Island project is about the people. The key idea to the success of this program is the experience and ideas the students take back with them to their schools, communities and their future. At the start of this program we thought we were going to learn about the native birds and what this project has done for them. Although this is not exactly what has happened on this trip, we have understood the idea of spreading the word. We thought that this meant getting people to come to future Blumine Island trips. Yet we believe the true meaning of spreading the word in this context is using this experience as little or as much as you want and incorporate it into your future. Whether you tell the story in a few years time to a friend or go on to pursue a career related to conservation and the environment every bit matters. We are privileged to have had this opportunity and although not all of our fellow students back at school will be able to get the chance to have this same experience, we feel that by telling them about our trip and what we did, that little extra knowledge they get from us could influence their attitude towards their current world and their future on this planet. How can it be made more sustainable and how can I contribute to this?

Our Blumine Island Experience Blumine Island has been an adventure for all of us because we have been able to learn about conservation in a hands-on environment. Josh was AWESOME!! We did many activities during this trip from setting up tracking tunnels to taking out the sewage in the tanks. We have had an amazing time here on Blumine and we recommend others should continue to support this project. 14 th - 18 th March

If I had two minutes to talk to the directors of the Untouchedworld Chartable Trust, what would you say CADE Blumine Island is a great hands-on experience for students to have and learn about the environment and sustainability. Blumine Island has improved over the years from being covered in pests to none due to the people who you have sponsored. RACHEL Blumine Island is an interesting place to come and learn about the plants and the bird and how to look after the island. Also how to clean the tracks. DANIELLE Thank you very much for giving me this chance to experience this project. I have learnt a lot of different skills which I didn’t think I would such as team building and learning to be adaptable. This has given me such a unique look at to what Beckie
