Mahalia Jackson was known as the Queen of Gospel for her unique and powerful voice. She was an inspiration and influential activist during the civil rights movement. She sang the day Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I have a dream” speech and also at his funeral a few years later. She also sang at President John F. Kennedy’s inaugural ball and was the first gospel singer to perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
