City State System  The Greeks formed different city states based on natural geography.  These city-states each formed their own government.

Monarchy  State ruled by a king  Rule is hereditary  Some rulers claim divine right  Practiced in Mycenae

Aristocracy  State ruled by nobility  Rule is hereditary and based on family ties, social rank, wealth.  Social status and wealth support rulers’ authority  Practiced in Athens (before 594 B.C.)

Oligarchy  State ruled by a small group of citizens  Rule is based on wealth or ability.  Ruling group controls military  Practiced in Sparta

Direct Democracy  State ruled by its citizens  (citizens are only males)  Rule is based on citizenship  Majority rule decides votes  Practiced in Athens (after 500 B.C.)
