6 Section Views

Explain the characteristics of a drawing that features a full section view. Describe the characteristics of a half section view. Describe the characteristics of an offset section view. Identify the characteristics of a view that features a broken-out section. Identify the characteristics of a sectional view that features aligned features.

Compare revolved sections and removed sections and identify the characteristics of these sections. Explain conventional practices applied to section views. Identify the proper representation of partial sections and outline sections. Identify the proper representation of separate parts in an assembly section view.

Section Views Created by an imaginary cutting plane slicing through the material An orthographic view

Section View Lines Lines used in section views: Section lines Cutting-plane lines

Full Section View Section view that cuts “fully” through a part Often through the central axis or center plane

Half Section View Section view that cuts “halfway” through a part Often removes a quarter of the object

Offset Section View Section view with a cutting plane that is offset through important features

Aligned Section View Section view cutting through a cylindrical object with an odd number of features Some features are aligned with a main vertical axis

Broken-Out Section View Section view with a cut portion broken out Does not cut “fully” through the part Requires a short break line

Revolved Section View Section view that cuts “fully” through a cross-sectional shape Shape is revolved directly on the regular view

Removed Section View Section view shown out of projection with the regular views

Conventional Practice in Section Views Even though a rib is cut, section lines do not appear in that area

Sections in Assembly Drawings Section view of assembled parts Requires section lines at different spacing and angles

What identifies a full section view? One-half of the object is removed

What identifies a half section view? One-quarter of the object is removed

What is an offset section view? A section view in which the cutting plane is not a single plane, rather offset through important features.

On which type of object is an aligned section typically drawn? A cylindrical object with an odd number of features

What is a broken-out section? A section view where a small portion of a part is exposed to show interior construction.

What is the difference between a revolved section and a removed section? They are similar, but a removed section is shown in another place on the drawing, whereas a revolved section is shown directly on the view.

What is a conventional practice? When a drafter breaks the rules or principles of projection for the sake of clarity, but standard references outline rules for the exception.

What is an outline section? A section view in which the section lining is only drawn along the visible lines.

How are individual parts identified in a section view of an assembly? Differing angles and spacing of section lines is used for each unique part.
