Stem and Leaf Plots

A Stem-and-Leaf plot is a method used to organize statistical data A Stem-and-Leaf plot is a method used to organize statistical data. The greatest common place value of the data is used to form the stem. The next greatest common place value is used to form the leaves. 17 Stem Leaf

Example: Make a stem and leaf plot of the algebra test scores given below. Then complete the questions. 56,65,98,82,64,71,78,77,86,95,91,59,69, 70,80,92,76,82,85,91,92,99,73 Hint: put the scores in numerical order.

The numbers in numerical order should be as follows: 56,59,64,65,69,70,71,73,76,77,78,80,82, 82,85,86,91,91,92,92,95,98,99

Since the data range is from 56 to 99, the stems range is from 5 to 9 Since the data range is from 56 to 99, the stems range is from 5 to 9. To plot the data, make a vertical list of the stems. Each number is assigned to the graph by pairing the units digits, or leaf, with the correct stem. The score 56 is plotted by placing the units digit, 6, to the right of the stem. STEM LEAF 5 6 9 6 4 5 9 7 0 1 3 6 7 8 8 0 2 2 5 6 9 1 1 2 2 5 8 9

Questions: a. What type of graph does a stem and leaf plot represent when turned vertically? b. What was the lowest score on the algebra test? c. What was the highest score on the algebra test? d. In which interval did most students score?

For the following sets of data, create a stem-and-leaf plot and answer the questions. 10 13 20 35 31 22 11 11 33 32 31 27 28 25 11 Calculate the mean, median, and mode. Calculate the range. Put the data above into a stem-and-leaf plot.

Example 2: 103 110 116 107 122 134 123 111 118 104 136 127 111 125 141 150 190 152 Calculate the mean , median, and mode. Calculate the range. Put the above data into a stem-and-leaf plot.

Write the stems that would be used to plot each set of data. 4.5, 6.1, 5.8, 9.8, 4.1, 3.2 continued….

Use the stem and leaf plot to answer these questions. E. What is the best test score? F. How many students took the test? G. How many students scored 90? H. What is the lowest score? I. Find the difference between the high and low scores. History Test Scores Stem Leaf 6 1 1 4 6 7 8 7 2 3 5 7 9 8 1 3 5 6 6 7 7 8 9 9 0 0 3 4 6 8 9 9 10 0 0
