Math 5 Coordinate Planes and Real World Problems Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

In this lesson we will learn how to solve real world problems using a coordinate plane.

Math Warm-up Find the area of this square. 15 cm.

Math Warm-up - ANSWER Find the area of this square. 15 cm. A = l x w A = 15 x 15 = 225

In this lesson we will answer the question: How do you use coordinate planes to solve real world problems? You will need a copy of the print out called M5L#51 Coordinate Grid Paper to use for this lesson. So pause the tape, print the handout, and then restart the tape.

Vocabulary Review coordinate plane- is a flat surface formed by two intersecting, perpendicular lines. Each of these lines is called an axis. x -axis- The horizontal line. y -axis- The vertical line.

Vocabulary Review Quadrants- The x-axis and the y- axis divide the coordinate plane into four areas. These areas are called quadrants. Ordered Pairs- Digits that indicate where a point is located on a coordinate grid. Ex: (3,2)

Vocabulary x -coordinate- The first number in an ordered pair. It is graphed on the x-axis. y -coordinate- The second number in an ordered pair. It is graphed on the y-axis.

Connecting to Previous Learning You have learned how to graph coordinate pairs (ordered pairs) on a coordinate grid. You may wish to go back and review the lesson on Coordinate Grids.

What letter is formed on the grid?

Document Camera Get your notebook and pencil ready. Make sure you have the Lesson # and date on your page.

In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Plot these points on a coordinate grid. Point A: (2,6) Point B: (4,6) Point C: (6,3) Point D: (2,3)

In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Connect the points in order. Make sure to connect Point D back to Point A. 1.What geometric figure is formed? 2. What attributes did you use to identify it?

In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Connect the points in order. Make sure to connect Point D back to Point A. 3. What line segments in this figure are parallel? 4. What line segments in this figure are perpendicular?

In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Emanuel draws a line segment from (1, 3) to (8, 10). He then draws a line segment from (0, 2) to (7, 9). If he wants to draw another line segment that is parallel to those two segments what points will he use?

In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Using the coordinate grid, which ordered pair represents the location of the School?

In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Explain a possible path from the school to the library.

On a map, coordinates are given in degrees of longitude and latitude. (longitude, latitude)

(longitude, latitude) Longitude = north or south (x-axis) Latitude = east or west (y-axis)

Find the longitude and latitude of Jackson, Mississippi.

Quick Check - ANSWER In your Math Notebook Find the longitude and latitude of Jackson, Mississippi. about 90 o W, 32 o N

What city is located near 85° W, 38° N?

Quick Check ANSWER In your Math Notebook What city is located near 85° W, 38° N? Frankfort, Kentucky

Coordinate Grids help to locate points or destinations. We need to follow the x-axis, then the y-axis. This is used in locating places on a map and used to describe exact locations with a grid. Lesson Review

Quick Check In your Math Notebook Find the longitude and latitude of Topeka, Kansas.

Quick Check In your Math Notebook What city is located near 106° W, 35° N?

Quick Check ANSWER In your Math Notebook Find the longitude and latitude of Topeka, Kansas. about 96 o W, 39 o N

Quick Check ANSWER In your Math Notebook What city is located near 106° W, 35° N? Santa Fe, New Mexico
