My Country By: Valerie Johnson

What is the name of my country? The name of my country is: Sometimes it is called America or the United States. I live in Iowa. Iowa is one of the 50 states that make up the United States. the United States of America

What continent is my country on? My country is on the continent of North America. There are many other countries on my continent.

Are there any landforms in the United States? We have many rivers in the United States. One of our states, Minnesota, says that they have over 10,000 lakes. On the West of the United States, there is the Pacific Ocean. On the East side of the United States, there is the Atlantic Ocean. We also have mountains and plains.

What is the most beautiful thing in my country? There are many beautiful things in my country. Some of the most beautiful things that I have seen are the Black Hills in South Dakota, Mount Rushmore, Niagara Falls, and the Grand Canyon. I like visiting my family’s cabin on the Mississippi river, too!

Who is the leader of the United States? The leader of the United States is the president. The president’s name is George W. Bush. Every four years, the people in the United States vote for a new president.

What is the capital of my country? The capital of the United States is Washington, D.C. There are many great things to visit in the capital like the White House. That is where the President lives.

What does the flag of the United States look like? The flag of the United States has three colors: red, white, and blue. There are 13 stripes made out of the red and white. These stripes represent the 13 original colonies of the United States. There are 50 stars on the flag. They are white and are on a blue background. The stars represent the 50 states.

What kind of money is used in the United States? In the United States, we use the dollar. We also use coin money. The most common coins we use are pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Our dollars are changing. Some of the dollars have bright colors.

What religions are there in the United States? There are many religions in the United States. Most people are Christians. They are Catholic or Protestant. Many people practice other religions like Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism.

What do the farmers grow in my country? Farmers grow many things in the United States. Some of the things they grow are corn, soy beans, cotton, and potatoes. Farmers also raise animals. Some of these animals are cows, chickens, and hogs. My father is a farmer. He does not raise animals, but he does grow both corn and soy beans.

What is the weather like in my country? In the spring, it is often very rainy. It is when the snow melts and the flowers start to grow. In the summer, it is very hot. Sometimes there are very strong storms with tornados and sometimes there is no rain for a long time. In the fall, it starts to get colder again. The leaves on the trees change from green to red or yellow, and then they change to brown. In the winter, we get snow. Sometimes it snows so much that we cannot go to school.

What is a sport played in the United States? The national pastime is baseball. Each team in baseball has to have at least 9 players. There are three bases you have to touch before you get to “home plate” and score a point. There are many rules, but the goal is to hit the ball and run as many bases as you can.

What is the name of my city? My city is named Des Moines. It is in Iowa. I didn’t always live in Des Moines. Before I moved to Iowa, I lived in South Dakota with my mother. When I first came to Iowa, I lived in a small town called Aurora, then I moved to Winthrop. My mom still lives there.  Iowa South Dakota 

Do I live in a house or an apartment? In Des Moines, I live in an apartment. It is nice. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. I share it with my boyfriend. In Winthrop, I lived in a house with my mom. It was a small, pink house, but it was perfect for the two of us. My dad and his wife also had a house that I used to stay at. What languages are spoken in the United States? The main language that is spoken is English. There are many other languages in the United States because there are many different people from many different countries.
