 The Mississippi River starts in Minnesota, way up by Canada and goes all the way to New Orleans into the Gulf of Mexico.

 The Mississippi River flows through ten states and the ten states are Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

 The Mississippi River is the largest river in North America.  The Mississippi River is 2, 320 miles long.  It is the forth longest and the tenth largest river in the world.  The name Mississippi River comes from its water course from Minnesota to Mississippi.

 The Mississippi River starts at a lake in Minnesota called Lake Itasca.  This is a picture of what the start of the river might look like. The river is a little smaller in Minnesota than it is in Mississippi.

Mighty Mississippi Some call it the Mighty Mississippi. It can be very powerful like the picture shows. This is a picture showing some houses that were flooded this year. This was caused by a lot of rain that caused flooding in several states and many people lost their homes.

`  Throughout the spring, the Mississippi River is a highway for barges filled with corn, soybeans and other crops headed from the Midwest to ports near New Orleans. The crops are then loaded onto massive grain carriers to be sent around the world.

 The Mississippi River floods in April and May 2011 were among the largest and most damaging recorded along the U.S. waterway in the past century.
