Presentation transcript:

Chapter Coordinator – Be’a’st Practices

Overview Session Format A Chapter – Structure, Objectives Goal Setting Getting People Involved Managing Time Tracking with Asha-Wide Handing Off

Session Format Group discussion: Presentation is a framework Sharing our perspectives Objectives Compile all our best practices and thoughts Come up with a document that helps chapter coords do a better job Helps the new person understand what he/she is getting into

Chapter Objectives Mission: We sort of agree on this… : Asha for Education Catalyze socio-economic change in India through the education of underprivileged children Vision: We all see something like this..: Many Indians The ‘ideal’ India.. Where everyone has equal opportunities… generally everyone is happy and living upto their potential

Chapter Objectives Objectives/Goals: Statement of Problem What needs to be done to make the mission successful

Chapter - Objectives Chapter Provide a structure and framework for volunteers at chapter level operations Part of the structure at the asha-wide level of operations Chapter Coordinator One of the people volunteering to sit at the interface Effectively communicate the gap Keep the bigger objective in mind Ensure that the chapter’s voice is in synch with asha- wide and vice-versa

Goal Setting Projects Awareness Fundraising Publicity Operations A specific plan Well-defined targets Well-defined deliverables Getting people involved What are some chapter goals that have helped your chapter get better

Getting People Involved 100 people doing 1 small thing each >>>> 1 person doing the same 100 things Laziness is the mother of all efficiencies - Shyam Raghunandan, 2001 If there is something that needs to be done.. Find someone who wants to do it..

Getting People Involved Always first go to the chapter for help, not to people you know can do the task Focus on the WHAT.. Let the chapter decide the HOW and the WHO Look people in the eye and ask for help Get the quieter people involved by directly asking them for their opinions The first task is the hardest Make it simple

Getting People Involved Lets do this vs. ‘How do you think we should do this’ Someone has a good idea.. GOOD.. Let them do it!! Follow up on requests and ideas.. In a day or less I think this is not a good idea.. will not work.. Vs. One thing we might want to do is.. How to operate without using the word ‘I’

Getting People Involved New Chapters – Getting Started Do the essentials first.. Get your basics taken care of Find a project to focus on Plan a small event Get your financial basics in order Find a running mate Don’t do it alone Relay tasks between you Karate vs. Jujitsu

Managing Time Don’t try to know everything or plan for everything Don’t react to everything.. Don’t speculate.. Let the ball come to you.. Talk to as few people as possible to get the maximum possible information Coordinators Use the phone.. Digest everything… daily

Tracking with Asha-Wide Volunteer yourself at the –wide level Mailing lists -projects, -fundraising, -publicity, -web, -treasurers Zonal groups -coordination, -chapcoords Focus Groups: LIN, -special, -computers, -n-logue… Discussions Keeping the chapter informed Work an Hour

Handing Off Handing off as a team Transition period Stepping back from the chapter Writing down your thoughts on the future Settling the new team down What Next? When I let go of what I am I become what I might be..
