Presentation transcript:

Project summary The project enables children and communities to learn about their heritage (which the WW1 centenary provides) – through engagement in a comprehensive programme of activities, culminating in a commemoration event where a school playing field will be designated as Peace Field. The project focuses on the contribution of soldiers and their families in Kent and the role sport has played in bringing nations together. Participating children will be given the unique opportunity to research former pupils and staff from the WW1 period, building connections with those who played games on the very school field they play games on today. Project activities are fun and engaging and schools will have access to local library resources, museums, university expertise, workshops, guest speakers and experts who will support them throughout. Completed projects will be added to historical records and project websites, as well as exhibitions and media, so the whole community can learn more about their heritage.

Programme HUB Schools HUB schools will act as their community’s centre for the project. They will provide approximately 20 students with a project focus on heritage and the contribution made by soldiers and their families in Kent, and the important role sport has played (and continues to play) in bringing nations and their people together. HUB Schools will visit Maidstone Museum and Kent University in order to aid their project. HUB Schools will receive a workshop supported by the NCFA and Kent County Council, Libraries, Registration & Archives. HUB schools will host a Peace Fields Project event at the end of their project which will feature an exhibition of their schools work. A sports day event with up to 10 LINK schools (primary or secondary, each LINK school with a team of 10 players) participate in football, rugby and cricket games. The games will be followed by the official ceremony of twinning their Peace Field with Flanders Peace Field, which will be facilitated by the Royal British Legion and NCFA.

Impact Young people will feel connected to their heritage. Young people will discover the importance of remembrance. Young people will be in a position to contextualise their work gaining skills in research, critical analysis, recording and sharing work with their community, LINK and NETWORK schools, home and abroad. Young People will benefit from the intergenerational relationships. HUB schools will provide volunteers in the community the opportunity to participate in the project through research, sport and event organisation. Heritage will be better interpreted and explained for a wide range of people through the public display of materials within Kent Libraries and Museums, plus online multi- media platforms. The project will be made available for links with the Imperial War Museum and National Football Museum, this furthering the impact.
