Analyze the causes of World War I Judge who is the guiltiest country for causing World War I

Back when it was fought, AKA… 1914 to 1918 WW1 is like most wars  –Blame is shared WW1 end in a unique and problematic way… –Armistice  WW1 is not like WW2 (good vs evil)

1.Imperialism and Economic Rivalries 2.Nationalism 3.Militarism and Arms Race 4.Alliances

We already know what it is… Who is guilty of following New Imperialism?

Competition to be better than your opponent countries…in what area? How does this connect to Imperialism? Who is guilty?

4 forms of it… –Unifies –Divides –Healthy Pride –Jingoism Why can too much of it be a cause of WWI? –Why is Social Darwinism a reason?

Rich in resources By 1914, who has it? –Who wants it back When was it exchanged? –Why can this be a big deal for France?

War = ? Social Darwinism in action…why? Who is guilty of building up their military too much? Rank them too

Countries pledge to defend each other…(?) Led by fear, distrust, and militarization Alliances = buddies at a bar

1882…Triple Alliance Germany entices GB 1887…Reinsurance Treaty 1914…Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy

Italy, Germany, A-H Germany and Russia = How does Germany look? How can this 4- country alliance break up?

Germany wants GB to be?? –Allies (uses race to entice) GB’s answer? –No thanks Germany = ?? –Bully analogy –Sees GB standing in the way of German ambitions –Feels encircled by Europe

Between Germany (Otto) and Russia What happens to it? –1888 – Kaiser William II does not renew it –Russia free to make new alliances Kaiser will try to do what later on? –Get back Russia

What country has issues with another country in this alliance? (Sorie?) –How can Italy drop out of this alliance?

Who initiates this “3-way?” –France!!!

1894…Franco-Russian Alliance –France + Russia defend each other if attacked by Germany 1904…Entente Cordiale –Settled colonial disagreements between France and Great Britain 1907…Anglo-Russian Entente –GB and Russia become allies
