Developing Program Outcomes Spring 2007 Seminar Coffeyville Community College Don Lind – Marla Larimore Technical Programs Transfer (Electives) General Education Program Specific

Learner Outcomes Must Be Established at the Institutional Level And at the Program Level And at the Course Level

Program Outcomes Are used to determine whether the program’s purpose is being achieved. Outcomes information provides concrete, meaningful, and useful evidence of achievement of the program’s purpose. Outcomes also provide information to direct improvement. Thus, a program’s instructional outcomes serve as the foundation for assessment planning.

Program Mission Statement A mission statement is a brief description of a program’s fundamental purpose. It answers the question, “Why do we exist?” There should be a linkage between the mission of the college and that of the program. Likewise, their should be a connection between a program’s mission and its outcomes A mission statement is a description of the program’s goals.

Goals vs. Outcomes GoalsOutcomes Broad, future-oriented statements Brief, clear statements of results Reflect what the program is striving towards or hoping to become Describe the desired learning/behaviors of students completing the program or course Refer to instructional processes/activities Refer to results of instructional processes/activities Used primarily in policy making and general program planning Used to assess effectiveness of curriculum and provide information for improvements

Writing Program Outcomes What should your students be able to demonstrate? Start small-with three to five outcomes. Keep them measurable. Outcomes are faculty written and updated. Must support at least one institutional outcome.

Outcomes Schema

Creating Program Outcomes Number –three to five per program Specificity –not highly detailed Comprehensiveness –all courses must be covered Linkage –courses…programs…institutional

Levels of Outcomes 1.Recognition/Recall 2.Comprehension/Application 3.Critical Thinking/Problem Solving

Linkage to Institutional Outcomes Identification of key course outcomes. (found in course syllabi) Identify supported program outcome of reach course outcome. Establish uniform links from course outcomes to program outcomes. (Especially in cases of multiple instructors.)

“Winding Up” …..
