This year We will be working on the Georgia Standards of Excellence for first grade. We will see a lot of growth in each and every child especially in reading and math. TEAM= Together Everyone Achieves More Volunteer: I am to the point of needing classroom volunteers; some of you have sent in the volunteer sheet. If not, let me know when and how you can help! Mrs. Green’s website: lt.aspx lt.aspx

Reading We will be reading a variety of literature possibly including stories from the reading book, and other works of literature. We will be working on various skills as we read our stories. At times, students may not all be reading the same stories due to individual students needs. We are using the Fundations program to work on handwriting, phonics, and other skills.

Language Arts and Spelling We will work on multiple writing and grammar skills throughout the year. Spelling words are based on various assessments and student progress on skills. There are multiple list (currently four) in order to meet student needs.

Math We will be working on many different math concepts this year. Some topics include: Addition Subtraction Length Time Numbers to 120 Geometry

Science/Social Studies Grades are participatory- involvement in class projects, discussions, and activities Some science topics of study include: Weather and the Seasons Sound Magnets Living Things Some social studies topics of study include: Famous Americans Geography related to the child and major world geography

Grading Procedures O-outstanding 90 – 100 S-satisfactory 80 – 89 N – needs improvement 70 – 79  U – unsatisfactory 69-  Some papers will just be graded for completion or may be group work and will have a on them

Classroom Management All students start with two golden tickets for the week If a student has an issue during the da, we discuss the behavior and how it should be fixed. If they continue similar behaviors, or do something such as pushing, etc., they may remove a golden ticket If a student demonstrates positive behaviors during the day, they may receive additional golden tickets. I look for the positive and feel that all students can turn their day around. Behavior is documented on the Golden Ticket sheet that is sent home on Friday. However, if I feel there is something that needs more immediate attention, it will be noted in the agenda, an , or a phone call.

House Keeping Homework: Please make sure that your child completes their homework and returns it in their red homework folder on Friday. Their graded papers and other important notes will come home on Friday in the blue folder, please return it on Monday. Snack: We have snack everyday around 9:45. Please make sure to send in a healthy snack each day for your own child. We do not have class snacks. Notes and Money: If you are sending in any notes or money, please place it in the front pocket of the agenda.

How can you help? READ with your child: listen to them read, read with them, or read to them Homework help is OK. If your child is having trouble reading a math problem, figuring out an answer to a reading question, etc.- please help them. Talk out the answer though and help them find it or the way to get it, don’t just give them the answer. You are a teacher, too! Always contact me if something happens in your child’s life that may have an impact on their school day. (example: dog dies, storms in the night kept them awake, really rough morning, or other issues that may affect them emotionally or physically)

What Every Child Needs... Appreciation, just for who they are. Balance, not too little, not too much. Commitment, be there for them. Dreams, to touch the future. Empathy, to be heard and cared for. Family and friends, we all need love. Guidance, to help them find their way. Healthy Habits to live their best life. Inspiration, to be all they can be. Joyful childhood memories. Kindness, little things mean a lot. Limits, make agreements together. Mentors, to give wings to their dreams. Nature, to delight in rainbows and butterflies. Opportunities, to make their hearts sing. Play, the 'work' of childhood. Quiet Time, to recharge their batteries. Respect, to be seen and heard. Security, to help them feel safe. Teachers, to lead by example. Unconditional love, to thrive. Values- they learn what they live. Words of hope and support Xoxoxo's, every chance you get. You, your presence more than presents. Zzzzzzz's, a good night's sleep. © Meiji Stewart.

Thank you for visiting our classroom! If you have any questions, please let Mrs. Green know. Have a great night!
