Carol Jones, PhD. Stored Product Engineering Biosystems and Ag. Engr. Dept. Aflatoxin in Storage Enid Aflatoxin Workshop May 9, 2014

Carol Jones, PhD. Stored Product Engineering Biosystems and Ag. Engr. Dept. Stillwater, OK Why Does Aflatoxin Develop in Storage? Testing is not complete assurance that there isn’t existence in some portion of the bulk Aspergillus may exist in leftover grain IF Aspergillus is present and conditions are present for mold growth….then Aflatoxin develops

Carol Jones, PhD. Stored Product Engineering Biosystems and Ag. Engr. Dept. Stillwater, OK What are these conditions? Broken/damaged kernels or seeds Foreign material Trash at walls and fines in the middle Leaky bins Pockets of wet grain Blended high moisture/low moisture grain Moisture migration

Carol Jones, PhD. Stored Product Engineering Biosystems and Ag. Engr. Dept. Stillwater, OK Remedies: Broken Kernels Check harvesting and handling equipment Worn augers can cause kernel damage Set combines correctly Grain may need to be cleaned before storage

Carol Jones, PhD. Stored Product Engineering Biosystems and Ag. Engr. Dept. Stillwater, OK Remedies: Leaks and Moisture Check bins often for missing bolts, cracks, slab cracks, misaligned sheets, poorly fitting roof hatches/vents….potential leaks Blending can cause pockets of moisture Research shows that a 2% MC difference can exist even in well blended grain Properly size vents and exhaust fans Properly size and manage aeration systems

Carol Jones, PhD. Stored Product Engineering Biosystems and Ag. Engr. Dept. Stillwater, OK Remedies: Aeration vs Turning Turning causes spread of molds and breaks kernels Turning causes shrink Turning does not change MC or temperature enough to outweigh the hazards Aeration, if managed properly, can hold mold growth to a minimum Aeration helps to manage moisture migration

Carol Jones, PhD. Stored Product Engineering Biosystems and Ag. Engr. Dept. Stillwater, OK Remedies: Aeration management Get an EMC-ERH chart and follow it

Carol Jones, PhD. Stored Product Engineering Biosystems and Ag. Engr. Dept. Stillwater, OK Remedies: Aeration management Monitor temperature Test moisture content by taking samples or probing Aspergillus likes F, % RH, and wet grain Core grain if the hotspot is in the middle Move the grain if necessary….last resort

Carol Jones, PhD. Stored Product Engineering Biosystems and Ag. Engr. Dept. Stillwater, OK Remember: What goes in the bin…does NOT improve! Store good quality with good quality Segregate potential problems Do your maintenance CLEAN EQUIPMENT and BINS!!
