Coniferous Forest By: Vince Bonofiglio

Location  Taigas have cold harsh climate with a low rate of precipitation.  The Coniferous forest biome is south of the arctic tundra.  The largest stretch of Coniferous forest in the world circles the earth in the northern hemisphere.

Landscape  Open woodlands with widely spaced trees or dense forest.  The soil is not very fertile however because there is no leaves to decompose and enrich it.  The forest is made up of mostly cone bearing trees.

Plants/animals  The Short Tailed Weasel are small furry mammals that are excellent hunters.  The Wolverine is a large strong ferocious type of weasel.

Plants/ animals  The Lemming is a small mouse like rodent which weighs 1and a half to 4 ounces.

Fun facts  Taiga is a Russian word for wet soggy pine forest.  Taiga supplies most of the worlds soft wood timber which is used to make paper.  Taigas are low in animals do to harsh winter.
