What’s the conclusion? A skills development activity for GCSE

© OCR 2012 ● Analyse evidence in order to write a conclusion and comment on how confident you are with it. ● Explain how to make your conclusion more secure. ● Describe the effects of alcohol and caffeine on brain activity. OBJECTIVES 3

© OCR 2012 Buzz is more than an alcoholic drink. © OCR 2011 Engage 4

© OCR 2012 It keeps your mind and body in top gear! © OCR 2012 Engage 5

© OCR 2012 Drink Buzz. Keep partying. Engage 6

© OCR 2012 Welcome to the production team! On our next programme we’re investigating a controversial new drink: Buzz. The maker claims: drinking a mix of caffeine and alcohol keeps you alert. We’re worried that people will drink Buzz and think they can still drive. So we’re going to test the claim. Chris (Editor) Engage 7

© OCR 2012 “How can they claim an alcoholic drink keeps you alert – it’s a depressant?” “They have a hypothesis – how they think it works.” “There’s caffeine in it – it’s a stimulant.” “So the hypothesis is that caffeine cancels out the effect of the alcohol.” Later: at the production meeting... Engage 8

© OCR 2012 Claim Drinking Buzz keeps you alert. What tests could we do? Predict what results you will get if the hypothesis is correct “Let’s plan an investigation to see if their hypothesis is correct.” Hypothesis The depressant effect of alcohol is cancelled out by the stimulant effect of caffeine. Engage 9

© OCR 2012 So we’ll get professional scientists to carry out the tests. © OCR 2012 When the results come back, YOU draw the conclusions and write a storyboard for the programme. We want viewers to believe our results. Explore 10

© OCR 2012 Reaction times The test A computer shows you a picture, and measures the time until you respond. The lower the time, the faster are your reactions. Method (same for both tests) 120 people will take the test. They will be split into groups. Each person will be given a drink that contains: ● A fixed amount of alcohol (same as Buzz) ● A different amount of caffeine (between 0-150mg). They will not be told what is in their drink. They will wait 20 minutes and then do the test again. The Online Reaction Time Test Instructions. The traffic light to watch The button to click When the traffic light turns green click on the big button – quickly! Click here to start Hand-eye coordination Explore 11 The test You throw a tennis ball against a wall using one hand and catch the ball using the other hand. Your score is how many times you can do this in 30 seconds.

© OCR 2012 The results are back… Does the evidence match your prediction? © OCR 2012 Explore 12

© OCR 2012 Our results seem to suggest that you can drink Buzz and drive safely. Is this the message that we want to give? What else should we do? © OCR 2012 Evaluate 13
