What makes a true insect? TRUE INSECTS What makes a true insect? Be sure to tell the story of the “hum” bug!
Check These Out! Pillbug Pillbugs and sowbugs are dark gray, 1/2 inch long, oval crustaceans that are humpbacked and appear to be covered with segmented armor. Pillbugs are different from sowbugs because pillbugs are able to roll themselves up into a ball when alarmed, and they lack the two prominent tail-like appendages.
Check These Out! Spiders Spiders have a hard body (exoskeleton) that has two main parts. Spiders have 8 legs.
Check These Out! Centipedes have many legs and their body has many sections.
Check These Out! Millipedes There are many species of millipedes, most of which are long, many-segmented, worm-like creatures. Every millipede has two pairs of legs attached to each apparent body segment. Most millipedes are brown or black, but some species are orange or red. They range in size from 5/8 to 4-inches in length.
They are all “bugs” But None of Them Were Insects So what makes a bug an insect? See the next slide to find out!
