Opportunities to Make Wisconsin The Healthiest State October 2015

Introduction Improving broad health outcomes in Wisconsin- how long and how well people live- requires improvement in specific health indicators spanning several health factor areas. The model to the right, from the County Health Rankings, shows four modifiable health factor areas that influence health outcomes.

Overview of the Report Each indicator is presented in a consistent format, comparing the values for: Wisconsin the United States the best and worst states, and Minnesota, our healthier neighboring state

On 10 measures, Wisconsin scored better than the U.S. average and Minnesota Percent of adults meeting recommended levels of physical activity Percent of population with limited access to healthy foods Percent of adults eating fruits one or more times per day Syphilis rate (per 100,000 population) Percent of children (0-17) without health insurance

(continued) On 10 measures, Wisconsin scored better than the U.S. average and Minnesota: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Meter Score for Overall Quality of Care Percent of female Medicare enrollees (67-69) who receive mammography screening Percent of adults (18-24) with a high school diploma Percent of total population living in overcrowded housing (> 1.5 occupants/room) Cost-burdened renters (rent costs and utilities exceed 30% of income)

On 18 measures, Wisconsin scored worse than the U.S. average: Percent of homes with a smoking ban Percent of adults who are obese or overweight Percent of adults eating vegetables one or more times per day Percent of adolescents (12-17) who use illicit drugs Percent of adults who are excessive drinkers Dentists per 100,000 population Mental health providers per 100,000 population State level public health spending per person Percent of children ages 3 and 4 enrolled in preschool
