Alcohol Learning Objective – to produce a line of best fit from prepared data and be able to interpret the graph. Learning Objective - To know the effects of alcohol consumption on the human body

Learning Outcomes All students will be able to produce a line graph Most students will be able to produce a line of best fit. Most students will be able to interpret the graph by answering questions on it. Most students will be able to explain the effects of alcohol on the body

Success Criteria To succeed you Can describe the major effects of alcohol on the body. b) Can explain how alcohol can cause disease over a period of time Completed a line graph, labelling both axes and using a suitable scale Completed a graph using a line of best fit, labelling both axes including units, using a suitable scale and giving a suitable title. e) Given detailed answers to all the questions using full sentences.

What is alcohol? There are many different alcohols but the one that we can drink is ethanol – the active ingredient in alcoholic drinks. Alcohol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, where it starts to have an effect on the CNS. The effects of alcohol vary from person to person and with factors such as: rate of consumption level of food/water intake age and gender body weight/body fat.

Most students will be able to explain the effects of alcohol on the body Small amounts of alcohol cause a person to feel relaxed and less inhibited. ( life and soul of the party) More alcohol has a depressant effect, making reactions uncoordinated and impairing speech. (you fall over and talk drivel) Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it causes more urine to be produced than normal. (helps the hangover get worse and you pee a lot) Alcohol also makes blood vessels dilate, leading to heat loss. ( dangerous for rough sleepers)

Short term effects Reduces inhibitions Depressant – lose co ordination Slows down reaction times Acts as a diuretic Blood vessels dilate

Most students will be able to explain the effects of alcohol on the body Alcohol slows down reaction times, gives a false sense of confidence and affects a person’s decision-making ability. (you will sleep with anybody who isn’t Quasimodo) At high levels, alcohol causes vomiting, unconsciousness and can even cause breathing to stop and lead to death. ( no jokes for this one. Mums screaming ‘No it can’t be’ is not funny)

Working with a partner - Most students will be able to explain the effects of alcohol on the body Close your books - Working with a partner - Give two factors that can affect the way the body handles alcohol ? Explain why these factors have an effect. Name three short term effects of alcohol on your body.

The long-term effects of alcohol Like all drugs, alcohol is broken down, or metabolized, by the liver. Over time, heavy drinking damages liver cells, causing them to produce fibrous scar tissue which blocks liver function. This is a disease called cirrhosis. Heavy drinkers are also at increased risk of cancer and damage to the brain, kidney and immune system.

Long term effects Affects decision making Vomiting, unconsciousness Breathing stops – death Cirrhosis Mental health problems, stomach ulcers

Foetal Alcohol Syndrome

Describe two possible long term effects of alcohol on the body. Most students will be able to explain the effects of alcohol on the body Describe two possible long term effects of alcohol on the body. Explain why it is not a good idea to drink during pregnancy.

Task 1 – draw a line graph on the work sheet using the data given. All students will be able to produce a line graph Most students will be able to produce a line of best fit. Most students will be able to interpret the graph by answering questions on it. Task 1 – draw a line graph on the work sheet using the data given. Task 2 – answer the questions in detail, interpreting the graph. Task 3 – identify the independent and dependent variables for the data. Are they continous? What should have been controlled if the experiment was valid?

Effects of alcohol by dose Teacher notes This ordering activity could be used as a plenary or revision exercise on the short-term effects of alcohol on the body. Mini-whiteboards could be used to make this a whole-class exercise.
