Class Discussion: Grasp the children’s attention and interest by showing them a large apple as the hook to the activity. Describe the apple (color, shape, size, texture). Show an apple cut in half. Discuss the parts of an apple. Where do apples come from? Display a map of the United States that point out where apples grow (window). Where do we live? Do apples grow here in Florida (mirror)? Show a short video from YouTube on the Activboard of an apple’s life cycle (window). Have you ever been to an orchard (mirror). Where do you get your apples from (mirror)? What are some things you can make from apples (mirror)? *Brainstorm and create a web on the Activeboard of all items students named. *When web is full, discuss all items listed.

Making Applesauce: As a culminating activity for our unit, we will be making applesauce with the apples that you brought from home. Discuss applesauce. What is it? Have you ever tasted it (mirror)? We are going to make applesauce using a recipe from Simplyrecipes.com (window). Discuss Recipe: 4 cups of peeled/chopped apples ¾ cup of sugar 1 tbsp. of cinnamon powder 4 cups of water Discuss Instructions: Wash apples and peel/cut Place in electric skillet Add water and cook apples until tender and water absorbed Mash apples and add sugar and cinnamon Teacher will peel and slice apples into large slices then students will use popsicle sticks to cut them into smaller pieces. Students will assist adding apples and water to a cold pan (window). While applesauce is cooking, students will complete an apple tasting activity.

Apple Tasting: While our applesauce is cooking, let’s taste the apples that we have left to see which ones we like best. Each child gets a slice of red, green, and yellow apple. Teacher calls out a color and students will take a bite. Teacher repeats for the remaining two apple colors. Using a graph on the Activeboard, students will come up to the board and mark their favorite apple on the chart (mirror). Teacher will discuss results of the graph and determine which one is the class favorite (window). End activity with a Kagan time, pair, share of why they chose that particular apple. For concluding activity the students will enjoy the fruits of their labor and eat their applesauce.
