IEEE/NFPA Collaboration on Arc Flash Phenomena

IEEE/NFPA Collaboration IEEE and NFPA are collaborating to increase understanding of arc flash –Formal agreement between organizations executed in November 2004 Data will strengthen electrical safety standards and codes

Overview of Activities Established IEEE/NFPA Steering Committee –9 members, including volunteer leaders and staff from each organization Established supporting committees –Research and Testing Planning Committee –Resource Development Ad Hoc Committee

Research and Testing Planning Committee (RTPC) TG1 – Research and Test Plan TG2 – Arc Fault Test Protocols TG3 – Thermal Effects/Arcing Fault Hazard Analysis TG4 – Heat Transfer and Injury Statistics TG5 – Hazards Other than Thermal and Electromagnetic TG6 – Electromagnetic Hazards TG7 – Impact of Enclosures Charter: Develop an in-depth research and testing plan of the arc flash hazard phenomena

Research and Testing Planning Committee (RTPC) (continued) Consists of 20 members –Chair: Mike Callanan, NJATC –Vice Chair: Daleep Mohla, Industry Consultant Provides requested data to IEEE and NFPA standards and code processes Anticipates completion of research and test plan 3-4Q 2005

Objective of Resource Development Ad Hoc Team Define and carry out industry fundraising effort to support research and testing Develop a detailed prospectus Seeking monetary and in-kind contributions –equipment, lab time, testing Issue solicitation mid-2005
