UC/LBL Partnership Goal o To provide all LBL researchers with on-line access to the same resources as UCB researchers  Represents a significant increase in many disciplines 3

Benefits To Date New titles o ACS Archive o SPIE – 7 o EDP Sciences – 12 o Karger – 77 o ASME - 17 o Academic Search Complete – large number available as PDFs o Emerald – 195+ o Annual Reviews – 28 ( waiting for contract) o Scifinder (partially funded from savings) DISCUSSION: How do we determine which titles are of value? 4

Partnership Next Steps Year end renewals completed Waiting for UCB contracts office to sign agreement UCB hiring additional staff – approved but now delayed o Librarian o Other staff Annual Reviews agreed but can’t be signed until contract in place Current negotiations continuing o American Institute of Physics (AIP) o Institute of Physics (IOP) o Cold Springs Harbor o Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) o ProQuest o Elsevier When contract in place – UC will send out blanket request to all other publishers 6

Cataloging Developed a method of uploading basic information on new titles to catalog o Will upload new online journals in February o (Also doing a complete review of books and will update catalog also February) Melvyl data not being updated DISCUSSION: How do you search for and access online journals? 7

LBL Library Staffing LARRC Group Leader Position eliminated LARRC staff report directly to IT User Support Department Head (Rosemary Lowden) Computer Systems Engineer position extended for projects including o Redo Library Web pages o Photo Archive system replacement Library Systems projects will continue to be led by IT User Support Computer Support Group Lead (Mark Rosenberg) 8

Space Reduction Cubicles erected this week Wood magazine shelving will be moved shortly nearer to empty reference shelves, then reference collection will be reshelved there. New layout for Library side being finalized Compact Shelving o Now requires card key access 24hrs  We will get monthly report showing usage o Will provide self-checkout of books 9

UCB Services - Librarian o Full time Librarian  Liaison between LBL and UCB  Manage the LBL content budget $ Committed for ongoing subscriptions + $ Discretionary for new selections  Monitor usage, citations and impact factors etc.  Participate in selection/de-selection decisions as part of UCB Library, representing Lab interests  Spend at least 50% of time at LBL Providing reference assistance and advice Understanding LBL requirements o Some time spent on UCB activities offset by other UCB librarians working with LBL 16
