KERRY WALLDREN BY RACHELLE

Kerry Lee Walldren (nee Black) was born on 26 th of March In 1978 she started at St. Brigid’s Catholic Primary School and completed her Primary schooling in 1984.

Her parents named her Kerry because her mum went to school with a girl named Kerry. Kerry had a younger brother who went to St. Brigid’s Primary School too. Her parents sent her to St.Brigid’s Primary School because her Nanna and mum had gone there.

Her first teacher was Mrs Wallace. Miss O’Neill was her favourite teacher because she was lots of fun and very friendly. Discipline was tough then because if you weren’t behaving or didn’t listen to the teacher you could get the strap.

Kerry’s favourite subject was Art because she had a lot of fun doing the activities.

The school uniform was very similar to what it is now (yellow and green) but they wore knitted woollen jumpers with their summer uniform. Sports uniform were green t-shirts and skirt, and for winter they wore pants. The classrooms had a maximum of twenty six children in each and the tables faced the front. There were over 206 kids in the school. Kerry remembers when she got in trouble for talking in class and she was sent to the office and got the strap across her hands.

When Kerry was at school the tuckshop was open to buy nice hot food. Homework was more in the form of projects which Kerry enjoyed.

Kerry’s favourite subject was physical education because she enjoyed sport. Kerry represented the school in athletics (especially high jump, spot put and running) and netball.

Kerry’s best friend was Shelly who has now moved away from Gisborne. The best day of school was the last day of school because everyone had fun.

Graduation was celebrated in Grade six on the last day of school. Parents each bought a big plate of food and it was shared between all of the children. Kerry was happy to be going to Secondary School but she did miss her friends.

Kerry’s children are the fourth generation of her family to be educated at St. Brigid’s and she is pleased that she sent her children to the school to be educated.
