Heart Disease in the United States 1 out of 4 deaths related to heart disease Men and women effected equally Coronary Heart Disease kills half effected annually US spends $108.9 billion/year for care of CHD Leading cause of death among: o African Americans, Caucasians, and Hispanics Second leading cause of death among: o American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Asian/Pacific Islanders (Center, 2014)

Area Programs Targeting Heart Disease and Stroke

Annual Pulaski Community Health Fair Hosted annually by LewisGale Hospital in May Free and open to the public Activities: Free BP screening, educational booths YMCA program demonstrations, Zumbathon to benefit Relay for Life Health Education Topics: early heart attack care, mammography, caregiver fatigue, stroke, and diabetes (LewisGale Regional Health System, 2014) Retrieved from

Step Out for Better Health and Nutrition Program Education Topics: goal setting, benefits of exercise, portion size, label reading, menu planning, recipe modification, healthy choices when eating out, low- impact exercise, and reducing stress 2012 Program results: o 75% increased their activity and were paid more attention to what they ate (Williams, 2012) Sponsored and hosted by Hensel Eckman YMCA and Virginia Cooperative Extension 4 weekly nutrition and fitness program held January 2014 Free, Space limited to 25 participants Activities: Health education and daily walking program with pedometers

Goal was to educate the public about heart disease through dinner/lunch with a doc and TV campaign Pulaski event held at LewisGale Hospital Pulaski Education Building on February 19, Speaker Ajaykumar Archaya, MD discussed heart FAQ Heart health topics aired every Tuesday in February on WSLS’ Daytime Blue Ridge (Pynn, 2014) LewisGale Regional Health System Heart Month Events and TV Campaign

Successful Healthy Eating Programs in Other Communities

Healthy Eating for Successful Living in Older Adults Program-Escanaba, MI This program provides 6 weekly sessions that teach healthy eating Participants are taught things ranging from what types of food are best to eat, how to grocery shop for the best items, and meal preparation Physical activity is promoted They try to bring together education, group support, goal setting, and problem solving It is led by a lay person with support from a registered dietician (UPCAP, 2014)

Senior Life Department-Hebrew Rehabilitation Center This program is affiliated with Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. They also have a Healthy Eating for Successful Living in Older Adults program that is based on the USDA MyPyramid. This program has 6 weekly, 2 ½ hour sessions. They end the program with a restaurant outing one month after the sessions end. (Hebrew, 2014)

Move 2 Health-Virginia Campaign in the Thomas Jefferson Health District to encourage residents to be more active and eat better in hopes of combating obesity Their focus on activity is to do at least 30 minutes of activity a day Their site also breaks down healthy eating based on stages in life from birth to older adults (Move2Health, 2014)

Virginia Department of Health Healthy Eating and Active Living Program. o Their hope is to use this program to help prevent/reduce obesity and chronic disease Their goals are: 1.Promote healthy eating and active living 2.Fostering evidence-based strategies, systems, and environment changes which support health 3.Compile and disseminate evidence-based and/or evidence-informed interventions which support health 4.Developing partnerships and community led initiatives throughout Virginia ( Virginia, 2014)
