Level 1 and 2 Mathematics Studying at East Norfolk Sixth Form College

Maths Error

There are two routes you may take for level 2 mathematics Route 1 GCSE Maths All candidates who enter College with GCSE Maths at grade E or above will study a one year GCSE Maths retake course and take 2 exams in June. Route 2 Level 1 Maths Students who enter College with a grade lower than an E will take Level 1 Maths during the first year, and then progress to GCSE Maths the following year.

Route 1 GCSE Maths Students with GCSE Maths at grade E or higher will study a one year retake course and will be entered for the Foundation Tier. Most students will students sit their exams in June.

Route 2 Level 1 Maths Those who do not have GCSE Maths at grade E or above will do Level 1 Maths during their first year at College. This course will cover application of Number and Measures and Statistical Methods. It will aim to strengthen skills and build confidence. Students will be able to progressively work towards two level 1 qualifications. Successful candidates will then be able to do GCSE Maths during their second year at College.

Homework Homework is an essential element of the whole course. In general, those students who regularly submit homework greatly improve their chances of passing the course. Homework is normally set on the first lesson each week and is to be submitted by the last lesson of the week, but this depends on individual teachers.

Course requirements You will have text books and past papers and other resources available on the College Moodle system.College Moodle You will need a scientific calculator, protractor, compass, ruler, pens, pencils and a rubber. These can be purchased from reprographics (or a high street shop). However, mobile phones are unacceptable as calculators, and are NOT permitted for use in lessons.

“Subject Extension Time” (SET) is held for ALL subjects during third lesson on Mondays (following Tutor Period). Many staff in the Maths Department are also available to give extra help during lunchtimes. This is an ideal time for you to get help on ANY subject. DON’T use it as “free-time”. If help is offered, only a fool would not use it!!! We usually find that those who fail at maths have usually ignored or refused any help offered!!!

Probabilities Answer true or false to the following; statements. Try to give a reason for each answer. When you roll a fair six-sided die, it is harder to roll a six than a four. If a family has already got 4 boys, then the next baby is more likely to be a girl than a boy. In a lottery, the numbers 3,12, 26, 37, 44, 45 are more likely to be drawn than the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6. In a group of ten students, the probability of two students being born on the same day of the week is 1.

Square numbers What is a square number? What notation is used to denote a squared number? What are the first 12 square numbers? How many square numbers are there? What is the square of -4 ? What is the sum of 5 squared and 7 squared? Watch the video. Could you win $16,000?

Finally Work to the best of your ability. Use all the assistance offered. Ask for help when necessary. Maximise attendance and effort, AND enjoy your time at this College.
