Enhancing the Book Finding Free Resources for Great Guest Speakers Presented by Merry Beth Hall, PHCC Educational Foundation Matt Kemp, Aireco, Inc. Theresa Dagenhart, Long’s Corporation

Why Guest Speakers? Reinforce a lesson Share detailed technical knowledge Cover a topic not in your expertise Raise new issues for discussion

Logistics Preparing to Bring In a Guest Speaker Make a list of what the speaker needs to know: Type of course Why he/she is being invited to speak Topics to cover Length of time he/she is expected to speak

Logistics Preparing to Bring In a Guest Speaker Make a list of dates available: When is the speaker’s topic relevant? Offer more than one date to the speaker Accommodate the speaker’s schedule as much as possible or ask for a recommendation for another speaker if the dates won’t work

Logistics Preparing to Bring In a Guest Speaker What will the guest speaker need? Will the speaker need audiovisual equipment? Will the speaker need copies of handouts? Will special arrangements be needed to bring in equipment for demonstrations?

Logistics Once You’ve Found the Speaker You Want Confirm all arrangements in writing: Date, time, location Topics to be covered Audiovisual equipment to be provided Any other special arrangements Put everything in writing to avoid misunderstandings

Logistics Once You’ve Found the Speaker You Want Generate Interest in the Guest Speaker: Let students know the guest speaker will be coming and the topics to be covered Have students to write down questions they might want to ask Provide students with relevant background information

Logistics The Day the Speaker Comes to Your Class Be sure you’re ready! Are handouts copied and ready? Is the audiovisual equipment available and in working condition? Are your students prepared? Is demonstration equipment in place?

Logistics Now…How Do I Find a Great Guest Speaker?

Logistics After the Class Be sure to thank your guest speaker Thank him/her verbally at the end of class Send a thank you in writing to let him/her know the talk was valuable and appreciated!
