Strategies for Persuasive Writing Part One Strategies for Persuasive Writing

State your argument directly. Claim State your argument directly. Example: I am going to convince you that our school needs healthier lunch options.

Big Names The use of important people or experts to make your argument seem more convincing. Example: Celebrities, like Oprah and Will Smith, have helped and donated in times of crisis. This is why it is important that you become involved too.

Logos Incorporation of facts, numbers, and information. Example: Did you know that the average school lunch has…..

Pathos Appealing to people’s emotions; happy, sad, or angry, to help your argument. Example: With your support, children won’t have to be without food, clothing, and other essential items.

Building a trust with your audience, getting them to believe you. Ethos Building a trust with your audience, getting them to believe you. Example: Believe me, I have been a teacher for 10 years, and know that school lunches are unhealthy.

Kairos Convince your audience that this issue is of high importance and priority, and they have limited time to act. Example: This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, you must act now to make a difference.

Five Techniques 1- Bandwagon 2- Testimonial 3-Transfer 4-Repetition 5- Emotional Words

Bandwagon persuading people to do something by letting them know others are doing it.

Transfer using the names or pictures of famous people to persuade you, but not using direct quotes.

Testimonial using the words of a famous person to persuade you.

Repetition the product name is repeated at least four times.

Emotional words words that will make you feel strongly about someone or something.

Take a guess at what propaganda technique are used in the next few advertisements.
