Promotion of Africa Ownership Key Milestones Presented by Chrispin Mmanda & Daima Athman November 3, 2010

Strategic Issues: 3) Promote African Ownership Objectives: –1) Establish a leadership structure with deep understanding of African research issues. We hope to get the leadership buy in from Uganda meeting and concretize the group –2) Identify and solve uniquely African problems of successful research administration. We are conducting the first training workshops this year, the plan is to have interactive sessions that will bring out some of the challenges and come up with best practices for benchmarking –3) Enhance the establishment of functional offices of research support in all member institutions. We request leaders in the meeting to consider joining ARAA advisory group –Hold seminars focused on uniquely African problems meeting has a ½ day workshop on RA –Create a pathway for a training curriculum through trainings and workshops. With the knowledge gained over time, we should be able to build on a pathway for a curriculum

Strategies / Activities (cont’d) –Conduct a survey using a checklist for defining an optimally functional research support office. This will be performed as a part of the environmental scan –Help institutions without research administration offices through seminars and trainings to help them set up such offices. This is happening at individual institutions level –E.g. Moi – Mbarara case –More should be done at the ARAA level after we conduct the environmental scan –Conduct seminars with stakeholders.
