Bell Ringers On a loose leaf piece of paper complete the following bell ringers. 1. (-56) (-17) (-35) 3. Nemo is swimming 78 feet below sea level. He chases Dory in a game of tag 46 feet deeper. Then they rise 52 feet. At what elevation are Nemo and Dory swimming. 4. Write a real world problem to show the additive inverse of 96.

Subtraction of Integers 1

Today I will be able to subtract integers given an equation.

What is subtraction of integers When we talk about the difference between two integers we are looking at how far they are apart from each other on a number line. (-6) – (-2)=

3 – 2 =

(-4) – 1 =

1 – (-3) =

(-3 ) – (-1) =

What happened when there was a subtraction sign and a negative sign?

Rule of Subtraction subtracting a number is the same as adding its additive inverse(or opposite). Ex: 4 – 3 = 1 is the same as 4 + (-3) = 1 (-5) – 2 = (-7) is the same as (-5) + (-2) =(-7)

Let’s Practice Copy the following problem and steps in your journal as I model. Solve: = Step one: Change the subtraction sign to addition (rule of subtraction) Ex: Step two: Change the positive 12 to a negative 12 (rule of subtraction) Ex: 8 + (-12) Step three: follow the directions of the addition of integers song. (Same signs add and keep. Different signs subtract. Keep the sign of the larger number, then you’ll be exact. Ex: = is the larger number and 12 is negative so the answer will be negative.

Solve using the subtraction rule 4 – (-2) = Step 1: Step 2: Step 3:

Real World Problems Clue words that tell me when to subtract: Difference, minus, take away, fewer than, less than, decreased by, are not, change. When reading word problems you look for these clue words when writing your equation.

Watch me solve this I have 243 dollars in my bank account. I owe the credit card company 156 dollars. What is the difference between the money I have in my bank account and the money I owe? Equation:

Let’s solve this together An airplane flies at an altitude of 25,000 feet. A submarine dives to a depth of 600 feet below sea level. What is the difference in elevation between the airplane and submarine. Equation:

Exit Ticket Solve the following 1.If a player had the following cards, what is the value of his hand? 2. Identify two different ways the player could get to a score of 5 by adding or removing only one card. Explain. 3. Write two equations for part number 2, one for each of the methods you came up with for arriving at a score of 5. 4.Using the rule of subtraction, rewrite the following subtraction expressions as addition expressions and find the sums. A. 5−9= B. (−14)−(−2)= C. (-13) – 6=
