QUALITY OF LIFE AFTER ACL RECONSTRUCTION USING THE IKDC QUESTIONNAIRE Author: Vitalis Lorand Coordinator: Lecturer Russu Octav, MD, Phd Coauthor: Modi Viviana Alexandra; Miler Georgiana

Background Arthroscopic procedures can be performed for: • ACL reconstruction • torn floating cartilage • torn surface cartilage • trimming damaged cartilage

Knee arthroscopy

Objective • Quality of life • Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL) • Hamstring autografts • IKDC knee score

Normal knee joint

ACL rupture causes: Skiing Football Jumping other sports with lots of stop-and-go movements

ACL reconstruction: Flip cutter Hamstering autograft Up side anchored by clamp Down side fixt by bioabsorbable plug

Material and method • retrospectiv study • 66 patients who were admitted to the Clinic of Orthopedics and Traumatology II of Târgu Mureș; • single bundle ACL reconstruction with hamstring autografts; • between January 2012 and January 2014; • rehabitation protocol was identical to all of the patients • femur-first technique and close braided loop fixation on the femoral side; • biocomposite screw fixation on the tibial side;

Material and method • We used the IKDC knee rating system • From the 10th to the 52nd week postoperatively (by phone interview). • Questionnaire item included: symptoms functional limitations in sports daily activities knee condition sports occupational activity level

Material and method

Results The IKDC knee rating system score after ACL reconstruction: • between 79,5-97,7 • average score of 89,9 • mean age of the patients was 38 year • range between 34-53 years • 53 male and 13 female patients

What is the highest level of activity that you can perform without significant knee pain? Group score: <83 - 100% Moderat 83-93 – 9,1% Very hard 77.3% Intens 13.6% Moderat 93-100 – 47.1% Very hard 52.9% Intens

How does your knee affect your ability to jump? Group score: <83 – 20% Not difficult at all 40% Minimally difficult 40% Moderately difficult 83-93 – 53,7% Not difficult at all 46,2% Minimally difficult 93-100 – 100 % Not difficult at all

What is the highest level of activity you can perform without significant giving way in your knee? Group score: <83 - 40% Intens 60% Moderat 83-93 – 34,1% Very hard 52.3% Intens 13.6% Moderat 93-100 – 100% Very hard

How does your knee affect your ability to go up stairs? Group score: <83 – 20% Not difficult at all 60% Minimally difficult 20% Moderat difficult 83-93 –65,9,% Not difficult at all 27,3% Minimally difficult 6,8% Moderat difficult 93-100 – 100% Not difficult at all

In the past 4 week did your knee lock or catch? Group score: Yes – 32 patients No – 34 patients

ACL Reconstruction score in percent IKDC ACL Reconstruction score in percent Excellent ( 100 – 95) 15,2% Good(94 - 84) 77,23% Fair ( 83 - 65) 7,57% Poor ( 64 - 0) -

Conclusion IKDC knee rating system score after ACL reconstruction whit an average score of 89,9 separate responses for each question whit a good outcome 92,43 % the outcome is good or excellent The results mentioned before shows an improvement on patient’s life condition, after ACL reconstruction and rehabilitation.
