Length: 5 feet (1.5 m) Weight: 850 Ibs. (375 kg) The sea turtle is a reptile that swims very deep into the ocean. Sea turtles must go to the surface frequently for air.

Green turtle (Chelonia mydas; local name: turtuga blanku). Olive brown shell, often streaked. Underside pale, carapace smooth, rounded jaw. Adults cm shell length, feeds on sea grasses.

The green turtle is the largest hard-shelled sea turtle. They are becoming depleted because of their eggs and meat, as well as destruction of their ancient birthing beaches. Only man, it seems has the will to destroy an ancient species.

These creatures linger from an ancient time, before man, when mammals were just beginning to roam the earth. Today they are in danger of extinction, because of the lose of their birthing beaches.

Humans have damaged the population of sea turtles because they are hunted for meat, shells and their eggs. The green sea turtle uses its fins like a bird to move through the ocean. Ocean pollution is the biggest problem facing turtles and all life in our oceans today.
