Image Formation Ch. 3 Kevin Bechet

Review for this Chapter Key Terms Video Formats High Definition vs Standard Definition Image Formation

Key Terms HD Television Sets- 480P, 720P & 1080I Digital Video- Pertaining to data in the form of digits. Analog- A signal that fluctuates exactly like the original stimulus. Codec- Can be one of several compression systems of digital video, graphics and audio files.

Key Terms Compression- The temporary rearrangement of or elimination of redundant picture information for easier storage and signal transport. Field- One half of a complete scanning cycle, with two fields necessary for one television picture frame. Frame- A complete scanning cycle of the electron beam. 1 picture out of 29 pictures for a second of video. Codec- Can be one of several compression systems of digital video, graphics and audio files. Frame Rate- The time it takes to scan a complete frame; usually expressed in (fps) frames per second.

Key Terms Interlaced Scanning- The scanning of all the odd numbered lines, and the subsequent scanning of all even lines. Progressive Scanning- The consecutive scanning of all lines from top to bottom. Refresh Rate- The number of complete scanning cycles per second. Sampling- Taking a number of samples (voltage) of the analog video or audio signal at equally spaced intervals. Scanning- The movement of the electron beam from left to right and from top to bottom on the television screen.

Pixel A series of small dots on a television screen that creates the image. ………..

Video Formats- Codecs AVI- Popular codec used for PC’s and Apple Devices MPEG 2 & 4- Standard codec used for video playback/ Standard Definition. QUICKTIME- Codec that is primarily utilized in Apple Devices. FLASH- Popular codec utilized for Web Videos. H264 (HD)- Most popular codec for High Definition Video.
